Patriot Games 2019
Burn drove up to George Mason University in Fairfax, VA for our final tournament of the fall season, the Patriot Games! We took on a Wild West cowboy theme for the weekend, and even got to stay at the homes of a few players that live in the area and whose parents were willing to host a bunch of smelly college dudes (shoutout to the McLean household and any others that helped out!).
- Fueling up for pool play on Saturday morning at the McLean establishment
On Saturday we cruised through pool play, beating Delaware 13-6 to start the day. We followed up our first win with a fairly close game against the George Mason Alumni, winning 9-7. The third game was against ECU, and after taking half 7-1, we won 9-5. Last but not least, we played UMBC and ended up first in our pool after dominating them and making some awesome plays to win 13-2.
Coming first in our pool meant we had a first round bye on Sunday straight to quarterfinals, where we played Liberty in a solid game and won 9-4. Then in the semifinals, we had a very tight game against UNC-Charlotte, and thanks to some sweet sweet layout Ds, we closed it out in the second half scoring 3 straight to win 9-7. Our finals match-up came against our in-state rivals, William and Mary. We ended up unable to solve their zone and they took a big lead in the first half, 2-7. After a much better second half, we ended at hard cap and lost 7-11 to take second place overall at the tournament.
- Sophomore Michael Snead nearly getting a layout D against William and Mary on Sunday
We are very excited about a second place finish, but we feel like we could have performed better if we had all of our players available and healthy. We are really looking forward to the spring when we will be at 100% and ready to come out of the gates smoking hot in Florida in February!
Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! 🦃
