Brickyard Brawl Fall 2019

The first official tournament of the fall! Burn drove down to NC State in Raleigh for what ended up being a Saturday only tournament due to heavy rain overnight and Sunday morning drenching the grass fields.

For this tournament, we chose to split the team into four even lines with a Game of Thrones theme. We had Houses Borathean, Stark, Targaryen, and Lannister to do battle against UNC-Batch, Clemson, and the Triangle Tourists.

Clemson was our first matchup, and we had a pretty even first half. We turned it up out of half and got a few breaks to pull away with some key handblocks, winning 13-9 even with a dropped pull by Cap' Crunch himself. The second game was against UNC-Batch, UNC-Chapel Hill's B-team. This game was a little more lopsided, and we took the dub 12-7 in the end, with Matty B tossing a hammer to end it. The last game of the day was a true battle against the Triangle Tourists, a team of the top high school talent from the Triangle area. After a very even start to the game, they got the first break to take half 6-8. In the second half, they had one guy beat three different people deep three consecutive offensive points in a row to hold their advantage, and we didn't adjust quick enough to find a break, leading to a 11-13 loss. Losing this game set us up to face UNC-Chapel Hill in the final game of the day. After going down 0-4 to start, we took a timeout and a moment of zen to refocus and finally got some holds on the board, making it to half 2-7. After two holds out of half, freshman Kiran got a huge layout D on an upline cut but had to take an injury. Jonson came in as his sub and managed to narrowly beat his man deep for our first break of the game. The following point, freshman Ryan (the new Rossum) got a big D on a deep cut and Jonson once again scored a break to make it 5-8. Darkside then goes on a break train themselves and we score one more point before the finish, taking a hard loss 6-13. A hard fought game that wasn't too bad of a result, considering we were running even lines and they were not.

Following our games on Saturday, everyone gathered at Adam Norrbom's grandmother's home or Adam Manes' cousin's abode for some awesome team dinners.

If you can't tell, Colum is rocking a "mullet" for the weekend in support of the team. Ian, Jared, and freshman White Lightning also rocked the mullet hairdos for the tournament.

Our rookies sure learned a lot and got some really good experience in different game scenarios this weekend, and we are looking forward to our next tournament which will be at George Mason on Nov. 9th and 10th!
