VT Burn is going to Nationals!

For the first time in Virginia Tech Burn's history, we are going to nationals. You read that correctly, folks. We are going to be competing in Mason, Ohio on Memorial Day weekend (May 26-29) for the Division-I College Championship.

Saturday - Burn started their first two games with wins against Duke and Clemson. But then, William & Mary showed up. After trading points multiple times, W&M got the first upwind break, which would lead to their victory. For some reason, we can't figure out how to beat them this year (We are 0 for 3 against them). South Carolina came next but they didn't realize that Ryan "Can't be stopped" Rossum would crush them after he received a motivational text from his girl. The entire game, Tyler aka T-dawg (South Carolina Alumni) was lowkey tearing up cus we were crushing them so badly. But in the end, he still had that goofy smile. We ended the day 3-1 and moved onto the championship bracket for Sunday.

Sunday - Rhys Bergeron said that for us to go to Nationals, we just needed to win two straight games. So we did. Our first game was against NC State Wolfpack, a formidable team filled with experienced high school players. The first half went poorly and Burn found themselves down 8-4. After a spicy speech by Joe Novak, D line went to work and brought us back from behind generating 3 breaks resulting in VT 13 - 12 NC State. After a series of turns by both teams, NC State managed to hold on offense and the game went to universe. During this point, I swear I could feel everyone's energy coming off of each other. I think we could've created two or three Spirit Bombs. After working the disc efficiently down the field close to their endzone, Rhys called a timeout because he wanted to fix his bandana. He then began the play with an around backhand to Dylan. Unable to find a reset, Dylan flicks it deep into the back corner hoping for a Hail Mary. NC State got up and blocked the disc. But it didn't matter because we couldn't be stopped. Our momentum was too strong. They couldn't even get a single throw from their endzone because they were too tired (Thanks D line). A sloppy flick led to a lay out D by Rhys (I could've sworn I saw him winked at me before he dove for the disc). After a few swings, Dan turned his body sideways and his skinny figure appeared out of thin air (according to NC State defenders) and found himself open in the middle of the end zone for the score. Happy Birthday, NC State :) George Washington is next.

In this final game to go, we knew from the start that we were going to win. Everyone was smiling and constantly cheering for each other with silly comments like, "You don't have to be lonely, at farmersonly.com" or "Happy Birthday, Steve/Angela!". I think Steve/Angela might've been an alumni or something because we have a disc that says the two were brought together by a piece of plastic and ended up married. Somehow became a meme. O line played perfect with only 3 turns (2 from the first point because Dylan tilted) throughout the game. D line got their breaks every 3 points. The score was 14-11. Then the final point came. Dylan threw a flick huck to Tyler deep. It happened. We won. We are going to Natties. No better way to describe our feeling than this picture (Grandpa Mike in the center). We actually had to zoom out from this frame to fit Freund's head into the picture. Just Kidding.

So what's next? We're currently having a team meeting to figure out the logistics. After doing a brief research, it looks like we need to do some major fundraising in order to make this tournament happen. But it doesn't matter, because we'll find a way to burn through this. We'll see you guys in Ohio!
