Easterns
The day had dawned, the stage was set, and the dawgs of VT Burn were ready to begin the final tournament of the season: Easterns. Being the oldest running college tournament in the country, Easterns brought the top talent from around the country to dirty Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. This was a chance for Burn to show everyone how they earned their bid to this prestigious event. The dank memes from car rides the previous day were set aside, for it was game day.
Burn's first game was a team we hadn't seen in over a year: Michigan. Although we didn't know much about them, we knew we had to come out hot. That's exactly what we did. Burn rang off a few breaks to start the game and never looked back. Final score: Burn 15, Michigan 12.
Our next game was against our familiar regional foe, UNC Darkside. We noticed that the towel squad had been removed and replaced with an even greater evil--swimming noodles. They flailed them and slammed them against the ground causing all sorts of chaos. UNC was looking fearless and looking to avenge their loss to us one semester previously. We came out flat and on our heels. We lacked focus and intensity, especially from our offensive lines. This led to a VT loss. Final score: Burn 5, UNC 15.
It is never easy to bounce back after a loss that hard, but Burn was looking to change its fortune and build some steam. Up next, the dawgs saw yet another familiar face. It was Illinois, a team we had beaten previously in Florida. We needed to be fired up. We played our signature All-Man D and fired off several breaks and countless Ds. Although our offense stagnated once again, we were relentless and stuck to our system. Final score: Burn 14, Illinois 11.
For our 4th straight and final game of the day, we had our toughest challenge yet: Pittsburgh. The wind had picked up and the field was set to go. We started the game with a break and the battle began. Burn fought hard with tough D from all, forcing many turnovers. We had many chances, but just couldn't capitalize. Although were beaten by a large margin, Burn played much better than the score reflected. Final score: Burn 6, Pitt 15.
Day 2
Cooler weather set in for day 2 of Easterns and rain was expected. It was beginning to feel like Blacksburg weather and that was enough to give the gentlemen of Virginia Tech home field advantage.
First up was a team that had beaten the great Carelton ultimate program the day before. Missouri had lost its other games, but we knew we couldn't take them for granted. The wind picked up some and conditions proved tough for Burn the first half going down 8-4. But we were not to be put down. After a rousing speech from our bean flicking Momiel, we brought the fire the second half. The rain began to fall, our deadly horcrux was brought out (pics below), and our sideline was fired up asking Saruman if that was all he could conjur. The dawgs came out on D to start the half and rang off three straight breaks. The power of the horcrux compelled them and our jet fuel melted their steel beams. The break train stopped seldom for refueling and Burn went on to win. Final score: Burn 13, Missouri 11.
Once advancing to the next round, we met up with a team we had played in warmer weather: Florida State. DUF seemed uncomfortable with the weather and we were gathering momentum. It was a tightly contested game with no breaks in the first half (8-7 good guys). The game went back and forth like this until universe point. We systematically worked it to their goal line, but a controversial call and turnover led to a FSU disc. They bombed it after two throws, but our secret, silent weapon, Ryan Rossum, beefed his man and got the D. Again, Burn marched the disc up the field and had John Cena sky a pack of people to seal the W. Final score: Burn 13, FSU 12.
People reloaded on caffeine pills, hydrated, and prepared for our third and final matchup of the day. Carelton was looking to avenge its poor Saturday whilst Burn was looking to avenge its loss from Florida. We were determined to show CUT (and Rookie) how good we really were. We took half up a break on CUT and fortune favored our "beef house" mentality. But our mental game began to slip and some unforced errors gave Carelton some easy breaks. Burn could not make up the lost ground and went down. Final score: Burn 10, CUT 13.
