Oak Creek Invite 2019

After a fun spring break, Burn was forced to return to reality a little sooner than the rest of the students. Some of us journeyed back to Blacksburg on Friday before the tournament while some simply met us at the fields on Saturday morning to start off our second tournament of the spring. Led by our trusty Coach Bryce and guest-coach David Slade for the weekend and benefiting from another first round bye, we showed up on Saturday at 9 am ready to play in weather much cooler than Florida but still warmer than Blacksburg.

Saturday - Burn began their day with an absolute smothering of UNC-Charlotte, winning with a lot of energy, 13 - 3. After such a dominant game to start the day, we started to look a little shaky against Penn State with a lot of long points full of turnovers from both teams. They took half and were able to maintain their lead in the sloppy game, beating us 11 - 13. Following the tough loss, Burn was able to bounce back quickly and once again beat down another team in SUNY-Buffalo, winning 13 - 4. To close out pool play, we had to face Johns Hopkins in a game to decide whether we made the championship bracket the next day. A strong start eventually fell apart as Johns Hopkins took a lead early in the second half. Our D-line struggled to convert after getting the disc and was unable to stop Gabe Hernandez and company, leading to a loss 8 - 13.

Sunday - Being undefeated so far on Sundays in the spring, we were excited to keep that streak alive and came out extra energetic all day on Sunday (some of our energy was also thanks to some of our girls team coming out to support us, thanks Burnettes!). Our first game against Delaware was a solid win where Burn looked in control from the start, 15 - 8. Our second game was against a spirited and competitive Georgetown team, one of the most fun games of the weekend for sure. It was a close game until late in the second half, where we found our spark and went on a four break run to close out the game 15- 11.

Next tournament is this coming weekend (March 30th-31st) in Myrtle Beach, SC. Keep up with our twitter for score updates during the tournament and stay tuned for a recap following the tournament!
